Guwahati, Jun 2: In a recent development, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) dismantled several Congress hoardings in the city just before Gaurav Gogoi assumed the role of president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). The GMC cited the absence of prior permission as the reason for this action.
According to Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, the municipality was informed that the Congress party had not secured the necessary permissions, leading to the removal of the hoardings. However, he noted that the party obtained the required approval later that day around noon. Former mayor Kushal Sarma contacted the GMC, and permission was granted to reinstall the hoardings.
Sarania emphasized that the GMC is open to granting permissions but insists on adherence to proper protocols. He stated, “As Congress is a national party and with the state president visiting, it is essential to follow the rules. We have no issues with them; it’s just that they failed to seek permission in advance, which is why the hoardings were taken down.”

Earlier that day, Congress supporters in Nagaon voiced their strong disapproval after the Nagaon Municipal Board allegedly took down banners and posters welcoming Gaurav Gogoi, the newly appointed APCC president.
Local party leaders accused the removal of these materials as a "pre-planned action" ahead of Gogoi's visit to the district.
Nabajyoti Talukdar, Vice President of the APCC, condemned the incident, claiming it was politically motivated and an affront to democratic principles. He remarked, “We completely denounce the actions of the Nagaon Municipal Board in removing Gaurav Gogoi's posters. The BJP is not the only political entity in the state; there are numerous other parties in Assam. This is a democratic nation,” Talukdar stated.
The Congress party alleged that the civic body acted under pressure, anticipating Gogoi’s visit and attempting to undermine the party’s outreach efforts.
